OUR CATTLE

Our Cattle

Have you ever wondered what makes Angus beef so delicious and nutritious? One key factor is the diet of the cows. In a cow-calf operation like ours, the diet plays a crucial role in the health and quality of the herd. During and throughout the summer and early fall months, our Angus cows are the only cattle that feed on the lush native grass in the high country surrounding Gypsum and Eagle, Colorado.

How does native grass benefit the cows?

The native grass provides essential nutrients and minerals that contribute to the overall health of the cows. Grazing on native grass also helps in maintaining a healthy gut flora, which is essential for proper digestion and nutrient absorption.

What is the VENCE program?

As part of our commitment to sustainable land management, we participate in the VENCE program. The jewelry the cattle wear around their neck is actually a device that allows us to track the cows with collars, helping us better manage our usage of BLM and National Forest land. By rotating the cows and monitoring their grazing patterns, we can ensure the vegetation on the mountain regrows and repairs areas.

How do we ensure a healthy herd?

At our operation, we strive to better our herd with superior genetics, resulting in better quality meat for our customers. By carefully selecting breeding stock and providing a nutritious diet, we ensure that our cows are healthy and thriving. We run a closed herd meaning everything on the ranch is homegrown. We don't buy other stock and add to our herd.

What do the cows eat during winter and spring?

During the winter and spring months, the cows are on home ground, feasting on a mixture of grass and alfalfa hay that we put up each summer. We put in the long hours and are blessed with a great hay production we don't need to buy hay from anywhere else. This ensures they receive the necessary nutrients to thrive, even during the colder months.

What is calving season like?

Calving season occurs in the spring and is both time-consuming and rewarding. It is a joy to see new life on the ranch and watch the calves grow and thrive alongside their mothers.

In conclusion, the use of native grass in our Angus beef production plays a vital role in the health and quality of our herd. By focusing on sustainable land management practices and providing a nutritious diet, we are able to produce high-quality Angus beef that is both delicious and nutritious.
